If you have had problems with frequency, urgency, leaking with urgency, poor bladder emptying or night time frequency we will be offering a peripheral nerve evaluation in our office.
There are two main causes of these symptoms:
- Muscle or motor function.
- Nerve or sensory function. The currently used overactive bladder medications are used mostly to treat the muscle function component. If you have tried a medication and are either dissatisfied with the results or have had untoward side effects, this new in-office diagnostic test may be for you.
Q: What will happen during the peripheral nerve evaluation?
A: Two tiny test wires will be placed underneath your skin near your tailbone. No incisions are necessary to place the wires. Your peripheral nerve evaluation will provide valuable data on your bladder dysfunction, so that we may make the best recommendations for treatment. If the test is successful, then you will experience a significant improvement in your current bladder symptoms, and we will know that there is a nerve component to your symptoms.
Q: How long would this test take?
A: You should plan to be in the office about 1 to 1.5 hours. The test itself should take less than 30 minutes.
Q: What happens if the test does not work?
A: The office procedure has had about a 70% success rate.
Q: What happens if I have a successful test?
A: If you see a 50% or greater improvement in your symptoms, your test is successful. You would then return to the office and we would remove the wires. This part is painless and takes about 1 minute. You would then, at that time, be informed of your next step.

Dr. Boone has been doing implantation of the InterStim device since the late 80’s. She has recently been doing them for fecal incontinence. The device was approved by the FDA for this indication in 2012.
This week, Dr. Bone saw a patient who had been getting up 5 times per night to urinate, having frequency every 30 minutes, urge incontinence every 2 hours and felt extreme embarrassment by her fecal incontinence. This was an otherwise young and healthy woman. Her life was ruled by her bladder and her bowels. She had a Test Stimulation in the office which proved that the InterStim device would work for her problems. When she had the Test Stimulation and had seen that the device would work, she underwent a 20 minute out-patient surgical procedure for implantation of the device. Dr. Boone saw her 2 weeks later and she is 100% cured!
Most treatments in medicine have an 80% success rate. It is very rewarding to have someone get a cure! This woman went from awakening every 90 minutes to being able to sleep a full 8 hours. This woman went from wearing a diaper to wearing a mini-pad for confidence. This woman went from changing her diaper as often for fecal incontinence as she changed for urinary incontinence to being able to have no fecal incontinence!
This is an example of a HOME RUN.
If you are suffering from any of these problems and have been reticent to consider the In-Office Test Stimulation that Dr. Boone does every 6-8 weeks, please be assured that the patients who have undergone this procedure are usually very happy.
