Friday December 5th is our last day in 2014 that we will be doing test stimulation for patients who have frequency or urinary urgency or urge incontinence or frequent nightly urination! If you have failed other therapy and want to be evaluated, please call our office as soon as possible. As most people have paid their deductable and are trying to get everything done before the end of the year, it will be scheduled on a first first serve basis. www.medtronic.com (see test stimulation)

2014 NEWSLETTER Update: Treatment of Men With Benign Prostate Enlargement And Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (BPH and LUTS) The American Urologic Association (AUA) recently sent Dr. Boone a review article of all the typical treatments for men with BPH and LUTS. If you have been to our office, you know that Dr. Boone has most men fill out an AUA symptom score on most visits. This score helps to evaluate the severity of your symptoms and to see if our therapy is helping you. If you are a male and have not done this score, go to our website and take the quiz. If your symptoms are in the moderate to severe range, you may desire treatment. What is Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy? It is a pathological diagnosis that indicates inflammation in the prostate gland. What is LUTS (Lower urinary tract symptoms)? LUTS is a symptom complex that can […]
Unless you have been given specific dietary or pharmacologic recommendations, the following suggestions help most kidney stone patients: Drink 10 10oz. glasses of liquid every 24 hours. Limit sodium in your diet to 1500 mg. per 24 hours. Two fresh lemons or limes or 4 oz of lemon or lime concentrate per 24 hours. 4 servings of calcium rich food per 24 hours. Take Theralith XR every day (www.theralogix.com) Provider code #41029
The answer to this question is absolutely, YES! Dr. Boone has seen three people, already this week who have harmed themselves by drinking TOO MUCH water. One person lowered her blood sodium, which can be life threatening. Another person overstretched her bladder to the point that it no longer contracts normally. A third person has given themselves “ over active bladder” by drinking too much fluid. How much total fluid intake do you need? If you are a kidney stone former, you need to make 2.5 liters of urine per day to combat stone formation. If you are a normal person, trying to maintain good health, you need your body weight divided by 2 in ounces per 24 hours. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, you need no more than 60 ounces of total fluid intake in 24 hours. Please, don’t over- do it!
While I have been home recovering from my recent surgery, I have been reading articles on prostate cancer. As a board certified urologist, I advise many men about PSA screening and about prostate cancer care. PSA (prostate specific antigen) screening for prostate cancer is a very confusing matter for most of my patients. I am attempting to educate you about the issues behind the controversy of PSA screening and to give you , my “opinion” based on 29 years of taking care of men and reading the world’s literature on this topic and attending national and international meetings where the topics are discussed by the world’s leading researchers. What is a PSA test? It is a blood test that detects the protease prostate specific antigen which can be produced in prostate cancer, prostate infection, and non-cancerous (benign) prostate diseases. It has been FDA approved for over 2 decades. Who thinks […]
Dr. Boone has recently been made aware of an excellent Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation video that is available through Amazon.com. It is www.hab-it.com. The most effective way to do pelvic floor training is with an experienced and knowledgeable physical therapist. But, if you are unable to invest the time or the money, this video may be helpful. The video takes about 2 hours to watch and has a full exercise program for treating stress and urge incontinence. If you have pelvic pain as your predominate problem, Dr. Boone recommends that you see a therapist as exercises can actually worsen your problem. If you have tried and failed the Kegel Instruction Program, this video instruction might prove to be a good investment.
In 1961 the first woman was Board Certified as a Urologist in America. As of January 2014, 350 women have been Board Certified in Urology in the United States. Unfortunately, the training is long and argues and occurs during the woman’s most fertile years. Having children and being a urologist is difficult. Of all the many urologists departments in the United States, only 4 departments have a Chairwoman. Despite the small numbers, women urologists have participated greatly in the furthering of urologic research and knowledge. 95% of all urologic work done in the world is still done by male urologists. Dr. Boone is delighted to report that Atlanta has more female urologists than any other city. She knows of 8 women urologists in the Metro Atlanta area and all of them are excellent physicians! One of Dr. Boone’s very close friends, Dr. Catherine Rhu DeVries is a professor of urology […]
Want to increase your testosterone “naturally”? Many medical studies have shown that the FAT cell is not just sitting there relaxing! FAT CELLS perform all kinds of “activities” that are not healthy for your body. One of the things that fat cells do in men, is to convert their TESTOSTERONE TO ESTROGEN! Yes, guys, those little fat cells are trying to turn you into a girl!!! There is an enzyme in the fat cell called Aromatase and it is responsible for this nasty little conversion of the male hormone (testosterone) into the female hormone,( estrogen)! Too much fat can decrease your sperm quality, your sperm production, your bone mass, your muscle mass, your libido, your erectile health and can most certainly harm your heart. So, this summer Dr. Boone would like for all of her male patients to get more active, hit the farmers markets and eat those whole foods […]
Dr. Boone read a book that may be helpful to some of her patients. The book is called Reclaiming Desire, 4 Keys to Finding Your Lost Libido by Dr. Andrew Goldstein. The book is sold on Amazon. Many patients in the Atlanta area have problems with the loss of libido. Dr. Goldstein is a respected gynecologist who has written on this topic. If you are suffering from this problem, you may find this book helpful.
